Sports: Winnipeg's Competitive Sports scene

Winnipeg has some great opportunities to watch somebody ELSE sweat it out, with some top-level competitive athletes.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers
This is Winnipeg's team in the Canadian Football League. The team plays at Winnipeg Stadium, just west of downtown. Their season runs from June until October, plus the play-offs. An exciting way to spend a summer evening with friends. Season Ticket prices range from $99 to $309, with discounts for students and youth. Call (204)784-2583 or 784-SEAT.

Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball Club
The Cannons are Winnipeg's team in the Northern League, playing out of the CanWest Global Park, just north of The Forks. Almost a quarter-of-a-million baseball fans attended games last year at the new ball park. The Northern League is an independent baseball league with no direct affiliations with Major League Baseball, but the level of play is equivalent to AA. Their regular season extends from April until late August, and with reasonable-priced tickets, they a perfect summer evening's family entertainment. Seasons Tickets run $281 to $705, with individual tickets from $5 to $13 a game. Call (204) 982 2273

Manitoba Moose Hockey
Winnipeg's team in the International Hockey League, which has 13 active teams coast-to-coast in the States, and in Manitoba in central Canada. The season runs from September until April, plus playoffs. You could get tickets for seats all around the rink (its no longer just the "nosebleeds"). Seasons ticket prices range from $410 to $1230, with individual tickets from $10 to $29. Call 780-SEAT for tickets.

    Winnipeg Cyclone Basketball
    The Cyclones are Winnipeg's team in the International Basketball Association, and play in the "Wind Tunnel" at the Winnipeg. Convention Centre. The team has been playing in Winnipeg since 1995, and attendance climbed 35% in the 1998-1999 season. Seasons Teickets range from $105 to $2000, with individual tickets ranging from $5 to $23.     Winnipeg Wasps Rugby Football Club
    The Winnipeg Wasps Rugby Club is a member of Rugby Manitoba and Rugby Canada and plays at Maple Grove Rugby Park (which has five regulation fields). The team has been playing since 1965.

    University of Manitoba Bison
    The University of Manitoba fields several top national teams, all called the "Bison" (only the Rugby team is called the "wombats"). Several of the teams are top grade, winning national championships and providing players for several national and Olympic teams.     University of Winnipeg Wesmen
    The University of Winnipeg fields several top national teams, primarily in basketball and volleyball, all called the "Wesmen". The games are played at the Duckworth Centre, widely recognized as one of Canada's premier basketball and volleyball facilities.

    Assiniboia Downs
    Catch thoroughbred horse racing season runs from April to June, with harness racing runs from mid-July to October. The race track is at the extreme west end of the city, on Partage Avenue past the Perimeter Highway. Of course, betting makes the races more "interesting." General Admission is free, with $2 Clubhouse admission.
