Winnipeg Local Information

Louis Riel Statue

Winnipeg was first explored by Europeans in 1612 (just 2 years after the Mayflower reached Massachusetts), and became part of the Hudson's Bay Company land grant of 1670. The community has been central to trading between the Europeans and the aboriginal peoples of the area since that time. When Lord Selkirk began establishing agriculture in the area, the population grew quickly. Since Manitoba joined Confederation, we have had a significant role in shaping it, beginning with the Louis Riel Rebellion. The city's museums and attractions reflect the long and storied history of the region and the province.

Winnipeg Local Government

Old City Hall

Manitoba is the seat of the Manitoba legislature, and as such also is home to many provincial departments and agencies. Winnipegers take a strong and active role in all levels of government and its administration. Winnipeg has a centralized municipal government, though the school boards are still quite fragmented (despite a consolidation in 2002).

Here are all the email contacts for your elected politicians.
