Bars Scene

Johnny G's in the Exchange District We've broken down the city by area, to help you find a good sport to head for a drink after work, enjoy a beer with friends, or dance the night away (either with that special someone, or hoping to find them). Here's a few suggestions about where to start out.

Exchange District
This area, just north of downtown is popular for its old buildings and its proximity to the city's theatre district. It means you can have a drink after work, dinner before the show and then head out for drinks or dancing after a show. The area's old buildings give the area's clubs an opportunity to create and use unique spaces. Nightlife in this area ranges from rock & roll at the Times Change Café, to dance at the mammoth Empire Cabaret or at Ampersand, celtic music at Shannon's, and blues at Windows . Even karaoke at the Limelight Tavern or techno at Gio's.

Osborne Street
This area, just across the Assiniboine River from downtown is Winnipeg's bohemian district. The fact it has a wide variety of restaurants (including "Little Italy" on nearby Corydon) means that its bars are also very popular. It is a "destination" district, where you can head early in the evening and park only once for the whole night. The area provides a range of nightlife possibilities, from rock 'n' roll at Toad in the Hole or the Zoo Night Club.

There are also a number of smaller "magnets" in the outlying areas, along McPhillips (around the Casino), along Portage Avenue (just east of Polo Park), and on Pembina Highway (near the University) that have not only bars but clusters of restaurants.
